SEO in the Age of AI Overviews
How to earn traffic when Google answers questions itself.
AI-generated answer boxes sitting above the organic results have permanently changed the click economics of search. For a large share of informational queries, the user gets their answer without visiting any site at all — and that's not a temporary trend to wait out.
What still works, and now matters more: genuine E-E-A-T signals. Real author bios, cited sources, first-hand experience and data the AI summary can't fabricate. Generic, thin content that used to rank on keyword match alone gets summarised and skipped; content with a clear point of view and evidence gets cited as the source.
The new tactic worth investing in is becoming the citation, not the click. Structured data, clear factual claims, original research and quotable statistics increase your odds of being the source an AI overview links back to — which still carries brand and trust value even without the click.
We're also seeing community and forum content (and well-run company blogs treated the same way) hold up better than thin SEO farms, because AI systems weight perceived authenticity. Measuring success now means tracking branded search volume and assisted conversions alongside rankings, not rankings alone.
The practical roadmap for most of our clients: fewer, deeper pieces built around genuine expertise; structured data on everything; and a content calendar that treats being cited as a real KPI, not an afterthought.
